Movie Review Part VII

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) "B-"
Leonard Nimoy's second outing is just
as strong as his first. The narrative is a little
more comedic than Search was. However
the performances and the all around light
nature make this a highly enjoyable Trek
film.

Dragonball Evolution (2009) "C"
Ah Dragonball Evolution. You suck,
but not as badly as I thought you would.
The film will probably never see another
sequel, which is sad. I say said because
it holds potential just as the first Fantastic
Four film did. Overall I'd steer clear unless
you're a fan of Dragon Ball.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) "B-"
The Final Frontier is not really as bad as
people seem to think. The effects are
very weak compared to other films, but
the story is on par with your average
Star Trek story. Still, it is the worst of
the original six, but that's not all that
bad, is it?

Chikyu Boeigun (1957) "C"
The Mysterians is classic japanese
scifi. The plot is fairly mediocre
and terrible. The saving grace is
some great set design, and a few
decent effects shots. Also
Honda is directing so atleast
that is alright.

F for Fake (1974) "A-"
Orson Welles does a great job.
In fact, this may be the best editing
I've ever seen in a film. It's a documentary
but good god is it amazing. I
recommend this to anybody who likes
Welles or doesn't like Documentaries.
This may change your tune.

Movie Reviews Part VI

Star Trek III: The Search For Spock (1984) "B"
The third Trek film is actually a pretty cool
guy. I like the end of the Enterprise, though I
felt like it's more film-like than Khan it still
maintains some cool moments. The Klingons
are awesome in this, which is great since I
never really cared for them in TOS.

Knowing (2009) "C+"
Well Knowing that this film is mediocre
will save you 10 bucks. The movie is wholly
unremarkable and downright silly at times.
Some of the visuals are neat, but this film should
just be forgotten.

They Live (1988) "C-"
Wow. Why? Why is this a cult film.
It's just...bad. I mean, it's saved by competant
direction, but there's not reason for this to
be a cult film. There's nothing endearing about
it. Oh well, I guess i'm here to chew bubblegum and
watch good movies...but at this point we're out.

Rashomon (1950) "A"
Hey, it's Rashomon. A Great cast. A great
story. Great Direction. While not as epic
as Seven Samurai, Rashomon still stands
on its own as a great classic. Some might
consider it better due to the crisper cinematography
compared to Seven Samurai. While I don't like it
better, I acknowledge this.

Unforgiven (1992) "A"
A great cast and a strong narrative drive this
western. It's probably my 2nd favorite western
of all time. I swear Richard Harris makes the
movie. Eastwood has never really surprised me.
He plays a decent dark hero, but he's mostly
just on screen. Hackman is also worthy of
mention here.

Movie Reviews Part V

Alien 3 "B+"
While not as interesting as Aliens,
it plays almost like a rehash. It is
extremely underrated. However, given
Fincher's other fantastic outings (Zodiac,
Fight Club) maybe more will find this gem
in the series. The bottom line about this
film is that it is as polished as Ridley's
but it just doesn't bring as much that is new
to the table.

Spider-Man 3 "B"
Raimi gets better and better at this action
stuff. And the actors are not all that bad.
However the studio's pressure to put Venom
in ruins the film. As does some of the most
bizarre choices of Raimi's directing career.
Still it's a fairly satisfying superhero outing
but sadly closes the trilogy on a sour note.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture "A-"
I don't care what anyone says. This film is
amazing. The model work, Robert Wise as
director, the score, everything. Admittedly
it doesn't feel that much like a Star Trek
ep. It's more like Star Trek emulates 2001:
A Space Odyssey, and in the end it makes
for a pretty satisfying scifi film.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan "B+"
One may say "Now that's more like it",
but Khan is a weaker film than TMP.
It definitely feels like Trek this time
around, but I can't help but notice all
of the sloppiness Meyer brings with
his inexperience.

Matango "B-"
Ah, Matango. You're so creepy and
fun. It's actually a decent flick, but see
it in Japanese. The Dub (released as Attack
of the Mushroom People) lessens a
decent horror flick. Though the Matango
costumes are a tad silly, but they make
for great M-1 vinyls.
